A sense of calm, playfulness, danger or safety is exuded from this one object that can be seen around the world: the fire hydrant. Although often glossed over, these vessels are very individualistic and have personalities depending on location, wear, color and so on and so forth. To me, they are a symbol of assurance. It is an object that exudes safety and calm while being approachable and child-like. They are a symbol that connects the city or town that is placed in with a unifying goal; to help when it is needed. The hydrants I have chosen are inspired by places that I have been and lived, so these represent a marking of homes and safe havens that have been created through my life. I seek to capture the distinctive nature of these objects and reimagine them into environments as works of art, as I have seen them.

Hi-drant!

I know you’ve been there for me my whole life, but I’m glad that I finally get to appreciate you for all that you do.

You have been an extraordinarily generous source of good for so many people from putting out fires, being that cold sprinkler on a hot day and even giving baths to those who need it. However, you being you, are just so humble and do not expect anything in return. People only notice you when you do not work or when they cursing your name because you are somehow infringing on their parking. They forget all the great things you do. The sense of safety that you bring to a block. They forget how you connect cities and places in an inconspicuous pipeline that we as the public never get to see. Although this appreciation is much overdue, know that we all are fired up to see what you do next!

So here’s to you, from your number one fan,
